sub:_3 prov:value "Incubation with estradiol (E2) decreased the synthesis of type IV collagen (61.6 and 71.9 % of control for 0.1 and 1 nmol/l of E2, respectively) in B6 aortic smooth muscle cell layers (ASMCs) but not in C3H-ASMC layers. But treatment with estrogen receptor antagonist ICI, abolished the E2-induced decrease in type IV collagen synthesis in B6-ASMCs (1 micromol/l, 110.5 and 114.3 % of control in the cell layer and supernatant, respectively), whereas ICI alone had no effect. Furthermore, the ER transcriptional activity was higher in B6-ASMCs than in C3H-ASMCs. Treatment of luciferase based reporter plasmid with ER transfected B6-ASMCs with 1nM E2 increased the luciferase activity by 2.2-fold. This indicates that estradiol induced type IV collagen synthesis was mediated by estrogen receptor beta.";
