rdfs:comment "Shom is the successor to the oldest official hydrographic service in the world (1720) and is a public administrative establishment (EPA) under the supervision of the Ministry of the Armed Forces. It acts as a benchmark government operator for maritime and coastal geographic information. Its missions are to understand and describe the physical maritime environment in relationship with the atmosphere, the seabed and coastal areas, to forecast its evolution and to ensure the dissemination of relevant information.These missions are carried out through three key activities : (1) national hydrography, in order to meet surface navigation requirements in waters under French jurisdiction and areas under French cartographic responsibility ; (2) defence support, through Shom's expertise in hydro-oceanographic fields supplied to the Directorate General of Armaments and through its military operational support capabilities ; (3) support for maritime and coastal public policies, enabling Shom to capitalise on its patrimonial data and expertise while making them available to public authorities and, more generally, to all sea and coastline stakeholders. Shom’s area of expertise covers bathymetry, oceanography, marine geophysics, sea level observations, marine sedimentology, underwater acoustics, physics of measurement and observation techniques, as well as maritime and coastal geographic information. To fulfill its missions Shom takes action at every stage, from the acquisition of data, through their tailor-made use, to the dissemination of the final products. Our activities are based on strong skills in the development of monitoring systems, data analysis and processing, and the development and dissemination of products and services. Shom is part of the ODATIS ocean data cluster (from the French Research Infrastructure Data Terra)." ;
